The goal of the first conversation

The first conversation is about narrowing, not closing. It should end with a shorter list of vehicles and a clear next step, and it should be possible to end it with no next step at all if nothing fits yet.

Expect questions about how you drive, what you carry, what you are replacing, and what you want your monthly picture to look like. Those answers filter a large lot down to a handful of realistic options quickly.

What to bring or have ready

None of this is required to start a conversation, but each item removes a round of back-and-forth later.

• Roughly how many miles you drive in a year.
• Year, mileage, and condition notes for anything you might trade.
• Whether you are paying cash, financing, or open to either.
• Two or three must-haves and one deal-breaker.
• Your preferred way to be contacted, and the hours that actually work for you.

Questions worth asking

Good questions get better answers than a general request for the best deal.

• Which of these vehicles is available at the Red Wing location right now?
• What is the total out-the-door figure, itemized?
• For a used vehicle: what does the history report show, and what did reconditioning cover?
• What are the terms if I need to walk away or take more time?

What will not happen

You will not be pushed toward a payment before you understand the vehicle, and you will not be handed a number without the pieces that make it up. If a vehicle you want is not available, the honest answer is that it is not available, along with what is.
